A Legacy of Service and Community

Veterans Day, first dubbed Armistice Day on November 11, 1919 commemorited the end of WWI. It evolved into a national holiday to honnor all U.S. veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Here in Central Florida, that history lives on in landmarks and community spaces that remind us that the freedoms we enjoy are carried forward through generations of service members.

Baldwin Park’s Naval Legacy (Orlando)

Before Baldwin Park became one of Orlando’s most sought-after neighborhoods, it was home to what was popularly know as the Naval Training Center Orlando (NTC), a massive U.S. Navy base that opened in 1942 and trained over 650,000 recruits through its closing in the 1990s.

According to a local Retrolando feature, “From Navy Base to Baldwin Park,” the transformation from military base to vibrant neighborhood has kept the spirit of service alive through memorials and community connection.

Today, Blue Jacket Park preserves that legacy with the Lone Sailor Memorial, a moving tribute to Navy service members. Nearby, the Lake Baldwin VA Clinic carries that mission forward, offering comprehensive care to veterans throughout Central Florida.

Orlando Veterans’ Memorial Park

Veterans Memorial Park

Set beside Lake Baldwin, this four-acre park offers shaded walking paths, engraved granite monuments, and benches for quiet reflection. It’s a peaceful place to pause and pay tribute to every branch of service.

Kissimmee’s Museum of Military History

This museum houses artifacts, letters, and photographs that tell personal stories from World War I to the modern day. Veterans and families often share firsthand accounts, making every visit meaningful and deeply personal.

Featuring restored aircraft and an active restoration hangar, this museum celebrates aviation history and honors the veterans who kept these planes flying both in battle and in legacy.

VA Loans 2025: New Updates and Stronger Protections

2025 Loan Limits

The new conforming loan limit has increased to $806,500, and up to $1,209,750 in high-cost areas. Veterans with full entitlement still have no official loan limit, though qualification and appraisal determine the max amount. Veterans can now compete more easily for higher-priced homes without being forced to come up with a big lump sum up front.

The VA Home Loan Program Reform Act of 2025 (H.R. 1815)

Signed into law on July 30, 2025, this bipartisan act gives the VA new tools to help veterans avoid foreclosure.

The most impactful addition is a partial-claim program that allows the VA to cover part of a delinquent mortgage, giving veterans time and support to recover from hardship. The act also introduces a required loss-mitigation sequence, ensuring lenders exhaust every alternative before foreclosure.

Together, these reforms close long-standing gaps between VA and FHA protections, reinforcing what the VA loan stands for: not only helping veterans buy homes but keeping them in those homes.

How to Honor Veterans Today and All Year Long

Even if the holiday has passed, honoring service doesn’t need a specific date. Here are some meaningful ways to recognize and support veterans year-round:

  • Visit local memorials: Spend time at the Lone Sailor Memorial or the Orlando Veterans’ Memorial Park. Leave flowers, flags, or a short note of thanks.
  • Share their stories: Sit down with a veteran or record their memories. Many local libraries and nonprofits host oral history programs.
  • Support veteran homeownership: Learn about the VA loan benefit, connect veterans with trusted agents and lenders, or volunteer with programs like Habitat for Humanity’s Veteran Builds.
  • Shop and support veteran-owned businesses: From small shops to local artists, supporting veteran entrepreneurs builds community strength.
  • Give back through service: Volunteer at the Lake Baldwin VA Clinic, send care packages, or take part in local drives that serve military families in need.

Every gesture no matter how small helps preserve the sense of stability, belonging, and gratitude our veterans deserve.
